Born in France, Helene and Celia Faussart moved to Chad when they were young, and spent seven years in the central African country before moving back to France as teenagers. A chance meeting with Abbey Lincoln was enough to convince the sisters to form a band, and Les Nubians was formed. Originally they were an a capella group that played covers of R&B, reggae, and African songs. Over time, they started working with a full band and writing original material, and by the time they were ready to record their first album they had synthesized the disparate influences of their childhood into an infectiously new sound. Their latest release, 2011’s Nu Revolution, is a relentlessly enchanting and energized mix of R & B, hip-hop, African music and other world elements.

With a distinctive “Afropean” sound and irresistible grooves, Les Nubians have spent the last decade becoming the most popular French-speaking act in the U.S. These Grammy nominated sisters have intrigued audiences with their inventive and glamorous style, and their unique sound embodies the timeless vibrations of Miriam Makeba, Ella Fitzgerald, The Fugees, Fela Kuti, Edith Piaf, and Soul II Soul.
