Liberian man stabbed girlfriend in Brooklyn Center

My nephew called me last night to check up on me as usual, but he wanted me to know something as well. His neighbor had stabbed his girlfriend last week. They lived next door. He heard knocks on his door in the early morning hours, but had a weird feeling that told him not to answer. Now, he is thankful he didn’t. The guy had been in his apartment before and he thinks this guy was knocking so that if he answers, he could stick the whole thing on him, at least for the moment, until there was an investigation.

Anyhow, I didn’t believe him, but saw the story on startribune.com and the bushchicken. I guess he was right. This is horrible and this is the kind of domestic abuse that has been plagueing our community. Read it for yourself…..

A Brooklyn Center woman remains in critical condition after being beaten and stabbed by her boyfriend earlier this week, according to criminal charges filed Friday.

Morris Gaye Kayee, 27, of Brooklyn Center was charged with first-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault in connection with the attack on the 26-year-old woman.

The violence between the couple had been escalating over the past week, culminating in the assault early Tuesday at the Earle Brown Farm Apartments in the 1700 block of 69th Avenue N., according to the charges. (more…)

What About Sex?

We do not talk about sex! Sex is like a taboo that stays in the bedroom. We should unlock it. Lets all agree that Africans have healthy sexual lives. It is nothing to be ashamed of. While most of us would prefer not to discuss it, we know that it is alive and breathing. So, why not talk about it. We talk about education. We talk about politics. Sex should be a normal conversation, not just something reserve for the bedroom. Drink it over coffee. Cook it into your dinner. Mix it with your music, and preach it into your worship service. Africans have to stop demonizing sex. It is not wrong, it is healthy. The question is, like exercise and a good diet, how is it good for us.  (more…)

So historic was this election, I felt it in Africa!

As I was traversing the polls today in the suburbs of Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center, there was an overwhelming feeling of success. At the time, there were no numbers coming in, but there were people. My purpose there was to see how the African immigrants would turn out and turn out they did. While I missed the crowds earlier in the day, I still managed to catch a few first time voters and their reactions. It was amazing. There was not a single person that did not think it would be historic.

Watching the polls tonight, I could hardly sit still. Right before my eyes, history was being made and it seemed like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dream of seeing the promise land was so poignant, at this particular moment, this particular time, in my lifetime. When I was told that Obama won the presidency, I could not believe it, until I saw Senator John McCain concede.

My bestfriend in Liberia, West Africa called at that same moment. She said, “you don’t understand. Liberia is rejoicing. People are out on the streets. Everybody is awake and it is just 5 am.” I knew then, this is just not a historic victory for the United States, it is a victory for all of Africa.

All of Africa is celebrating and I feel it in my soul! I will remember this feeling for a lifetime.

God Bless the United States of America, for I have never said those words before.
